Factors Producing Increases in Pulse Pressure

  • Increased stroke volume

  • Decreased heart rate

  • Age; decreased vessel wall compliance

  • Hypertension; move up the L/T curve to stiffer region

  • Aortic (valve) insufficiency; allows backflow into ventricle

  • Arteriosclerosis

  • Relative position in the arterial tree (e.g. aorta vs. small distal artery)
