Problems and Precautions in Measuring Blood Pressure:

  • The inflatable cuff must be held at heart level

  • Wider cuff must be used to measure pressure in thighs, or in very fatty arms

  • Prolonged cuff inflation may provoke generalized reflex vasodilation

  • Should measure B.P. in both arms (major differences may indicate vascular obstruction)
