Blood Pressure, Dr. D. Penney

Objectives:

To understand the composition of arteries, veins and capillaries, and how composition is consistent with function. To understand the concept of compliance, how compliance differs in different vessels, changes with age, and how it influences the hemodynamic characteristics of arteries and veins; arterial pulse wave shape and velocity and the various components of arterial blood pressure.

To know how blood pressure is routinely measured by the common indirect method, biophysics and limitations. To be aware of various normal and abnormal conditions which alter blood pressure. To understand the characteristics of veins, their role in the circulation, and the components of the venous pulse.
