A number of changes occur in the cardiovascular system with aging, only a few of which have been discussed so far. There are also decreases in maximal heart rate and peak cardiac output, higher concentrations of circulating catecholamines, a diminished chronic response to work overloading, increased vascular resistance, a greater reliance on the Frank-Starling mechanism for increased stroke volume rather than inotropy, etc.
