Architecture of the Circulation, Dr. D. Penney
Why not continuous arterial blood flow?
Need for pulsatile pressure, e.g.
- longterm renal function
- perfusion of major artery blood vessels
- carotid sinus/aortic baroreceptor response
Turbine pump:
- living - lack of rotating bearing in living systems
- mechanical - possible hemolysis due to cavitation, squashing, etc.
