  • To understand the means by which inhaled particles and toxic gases are deposited in the tracheobronchial tree (sedimentation, inertia. diffusion) and the airway reflexes available for response (cough, sneeze).

  • To understand the function of the mucociliary escalator in clearing the airways of inhaled materials.

  • To appreciate the various roles of pulmonary macrophages.

  • To be familiar with the various metabolic functions of the lungs.
