FACTORS RESPONSIBLE FOR FAHRAEUS-LINDQVIST (SIGMA) EFFECT (in tubes where R = 1000 ----> 7 um).

  • Fahraeus Effect (dynamic hematocrit falls below bulk hematocrit in tubes to D = 15 um)
  • higher v of erythrocytes than plasma
  • plasma skimming (RBC screening) present below D = 30 um; less at high Pp and Sw.

  • relatively larger slippage layer in smaller bore tubes

  • high shear rate

  • increased RBC deformation

  • "tank treading" by erythrocytes multifile vs. single file flow, unknown? (D = 15 -7 um)
