The calculation of total vascular resistance in a series or parallel arrangement of vessels is the same as for an electrical circuit. For a series arrangement one simply adds up all the separate resistances to obtain the total resistance. In a parallel arrangement the total resistance is equal to the sum of the reciprocals of each individual resistance.
