Hemodynamics, Dr. D. Penney

Objectives:

To understand the differences between transmural and perfusion pressure, the interactions between pressure and velocity embodied in Bernoulli's principle, and the contribution of kinetic and potential energy to total fluid energy at various sites in the circulation. To understand the influence of gravity on venous and arterial blood pressure and that the heart does not dissipate energy against gravity.

To know the factors which determine fluidflow as embodied in the Poiseuille equation, and its limitations in being applied to the cardiovascular system. To understand the concept of vascular resistance as it is derived from the Poiseuille equation, how total resistance is obtained from several resistances in series or parallel, and the sites of major and minor resistance in the circulatory system.
