Pulmonary Physiology - Gas Diffusion & Transport
Module 5 - Dr. D. Penney

  • To appreciate the difference between Diffusion-limited (e.g. CO) and Perfusion-limited (e.g. Nitrous Oxide) gas exchange.

  • To understand the difference between dissolved O2 and Hb-bound O2 and appreciate the absolute necessity for Hemoglobin (Hb) as carrier for adequate oxygen.

  • To understand the physiological importance of the plateau and steep segments of the HbO2 curve and the factors which shift the curve to the right and left (increase/decrease the P50 value).

  • To know the forms in which CO2 can be carried in the blood and the relative importance of each form.
