Pulmonary Physiology - Gas Diffusion & Transport
Module 5 - Dr. D. Penney
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
To appreciate the difference between Diffusion-limited (e.g. CO) and Perfusion-limited (e.g. Nitrous Oxide) gas exchange.
To understand the difference between dissolved O2 and Hb-bound O2 and appreciate the absolute necessity for Hemoglobin (Hb) as carrier for adequate oxygen.
To understand the physiological importance of the plateau and steep segments of the HbO2 curve and the factors which shift the curve to the right and left (increase/decrease the P50 value).
To know the forms in which CO2 can be carried in the blood and the relative importance of each form.
