Factors Limiting Full Oxygen Saturation of Hemoglobin:

(max. O2 binding 1.39 ml O2 per g Hb)

  • Shape of ODC (low slope of shoulder area)

  • Pulmonary capillary PO2

  • Methemoglobin (0.1 - 1.4% in adults, up to 4% in neonates; Fe in ferric [+3] form)

  • Carboxyhemoglobin (0.4 to >5% dependent upon smoking/non-smoking habits)

  • Shunts (normal type)
