In Figure 2.02 stroke work = stroke volume x mean ejection pressure. Mean ejection pressure approximately = mean arterial blood pressure.

Before 1950, the Frank-Starling mechanism was used to explain much of cardiac control. The heart was viewed as a passive device - simply pumping out what blood it received.

Cardiac stretch (preload) is altered by changes in blood volume, intrathoracic pressure, the skeletal muscle pump, venous tone, intrapericardial pressure, body position, atrial contraction, etc.
