Electrocardiography, Dr. D. Penney

Table 3. HEART FUNCTION

  • 2 pumps joined by common septum, driven by common pacemaker.

  • 4 valves: 2 AV & 2 semi-lunar.

  • Blood flow: nutritive (coronary), non-nutritive (that pumped).

    Atria -
  • Blood reservoirs (mainly) (resting heart rate), function as continuations of major veins.
  • Pump filling ventricle (higher HR's)
  • Ventricle -
  • Connecting link between low & high pressure systems; to receive blood from atrium it must decrease its pressure, & to send blood to arteries it must raise its pressure.
  • Four phases of cardiac cycle:
    1) pressure increases
    2) volume decreases
    3) pressure decreases
    4) volume increases
  • Aorta -
  • Conduit to arteries, arterioles, capillaries
  • Pressure reservoir
