Early Development of the CV System

The cardiovascular system is the first organ system in the body to begin functioning during embryonic development. Cardiac contractions begin by day 22 after conception, and blood begins circulating by the end of the fourth week. For additional details on this process, consult The Developing Human by K. Moore (1977).
