Barcroft and Haldane:

Mention should also be made of Joseph Barcroft, who at Cambridge University, made many contributions to our understanding of the respiratory functions of the blood. He is known as the father of fetal physiology.

At about the same time at Oxford University, John Haldane, was exploring the effect of carbon monoxide on the body, by using himself as the 'guinea pig'.
