Historic Images of Royal Oak, D. Penney, 2001

Grave marker of Francis Thornalley, who died March 20, 1863, 19 years, 7 months, and 15 days of age in the Civil War. Royal Oak Cemetery, Sect. K, Lot 958.

Verse - "I left the bloody field of strife, to wield the sword no more, my boddy (sic) lies beneath the southern sod, my soul it has returned to God" As with many who died in that terrible war, they were buried near where they fell, but markers/monuments were erected in their native towns.
