Sulfur Dioxide

Physical Characteristics:

  • a.k.a. Sulfurous anhydride, sulfurous oxide

  • Formula - SO2

  • M.W. = 64.06; 50.05% S, 49.95% O

  • Colorless, non-flammable gas; strong suffocating odor

  • Reacts with water to form sulfurous acid (H2SO3)

  • Solubility in water - 8.5% at 25 degr. C; also soluble in alcohol, chloroform, ether

  • Melting point = -72 degr. C; Boiling point = -10 degr. C

  • Earth air conc. - 0.05 ppm; produced in outer layers of the atmosphere by the action of ultraviolet light on oxygen in the air.
