Nitrogen Dioxide

Uses, Caution, Symptoms, Exposure Limits, Lethal Doses:

  • Uses - Nitric and sulfuric acid production, nitration of organic compounds and explosives, flour bleach, rocket propulsion

  • Cautions - Deadly Insideous Poison!

  • Symptoms - coughing, frothy sputum and dyspnea; chest pain, pulmonary edema, cyanosis, tachypnea and tachycardia; eye irritation. Inflammation of lungs may cause slight pain, but resulting edema several days later may cause death.

  • Exposure Limits - ACGIH TLV: TWA = 3 ppm, STEL = 5 ppm. OSHA PEL: STEL = 1 ppm

  • Lethal Doses - 100 ppm dangerous for short exposure; 200 ppm may be fatal.
