Nitrogen Dioxide

Physical Characteristics:

  • One of 3 gases referred to collectively as NOx

  • Formula - NO2

  • Reddish brown gas, non-combustible; irritating odor

  • M.W. = 46.01; 30.45% N, 69.55% O

  • Density (gas) = 1.58

  • Melting point = -9.3 degr. C; Boiling point = 21.15 degr. C

  • Decomposes in water to form nitric acid and nitric oxide. Soluble in conc. sulfuric and nitric acids

  • Corrosive to steel in presence of water

  • Pressurized brown liquid is called Nitrogen Tetroxide; mixture of nitrogen dioxide and colorless N2O4
