Physical Characteristics:

  • a.k.a. "laughing gas", dinitrogen monoxide, hyponitrous acid anhydride

  • Formula - N2O

  • One of 3 gases referred to collectively as NOx

  • Colorless gas, slightly sweetish odor and taste; combustible

  • M.W. = 44.01; 63.65% N, 36.35% O

  • Density (gas) = 1.53

  • Solubility in water - 1 liter/1.5 liters at 20 degr. C. (2 atm); soluble in alcohol, ether & oils.

  • Stable and rather inert chemically at room temp.

  • Occurrence in Earth's atmosphere - 0.00005% (v/v)
