Physical Characteristics:

  • a.k.a. Marsh gas, methyl hydride

  • Formula - CH4

  • Simplest member of the aliphatic hydrocarbon series.

  • Colorless, odorless, non-poisonous, flammable gas

  • M.W. = 16.04; 74.87% C, 25.13% H

  • Burns with pale, faintly luminous flame

  • Density (gas) = 0.554; or 0.7168 g/L

  • Melting point = -182.6 degr. C; Boiling point = 161.4 degr. C

  • Water solubility is 3.5 ml/dL at 17 degr. C. Soluble in alcohol, ether, other organic solvents.
