Hydrogen Sulfide

Symptomatology, Lethal Doses, Antidotes:

  • Symptoms, direct contact - Can produce irritation and damage to the eyes and respiratory tract, with skin can produce erythema.

  • Symptoms, Inhalation - High concentrations gives salivation, GI disturbances, giddiness, headache, vertigo, confusion, unconsciousness, tachypnea, tachycardia, sweating, fatigue. Systemic intoxication can produce paralysis of brain respiratory center, apnea and sudden collapse.

  • Lethal Doses - LC50 in mice, rats - 634-712 ppm, 1 hr. inhalation; LC50 rats - 444 ppm, 4 hrs. inhalation

  • Antidotes - Sodium nitrite can be used, forming methemoglobin. The hydrosulfide anion combines with methemoglobin forming sulfmethemoglobin. Oxygen or hyperbaric oxygen can be used as treatment modalities, especially in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
