Symptoms, Inhalation - High concentrations gives salivation, GI disturbances, giddiness, headache, vertigo, confusion, unconsciousness, tachypnea, tachycardia, sweating, fatigue. Systemic intoxication can produce paralysis of brain respiratory center, apnea and sudden collapse.
Antidotes - Sodium nitrite can be used, forming methemoglobin. The hydrosulfide anion combines with methemoglobin forming sulfmethemoglobin. Oxygen or hyperbaric oxygen can be used as treatment modalities, especially in adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
