Hydrogen Sulfide

Physical Characteristics:

  • a.k.a. Sulfureted hydrogen, hydrosulfuric acid, sewer gas

  • Formula - H2S

  • Colorless, but stinking gas (strong odor of rotten eggs)

  • M.W. = 34.08; 5.91% H, 94.09% S

  • Burns in air with pale blue flame

  • Density (gas) = 1.539

  • Melting point = -85.5 degr. C; Boiling point = -60.3 degr. C

  • Solubility in water - 1 g in 242 ml water at 20 degr. C.; also soluble in glycerol, gasoline, kerosene and crude oil

  • Less soluble in alcohol, other neutral organic solvents
