Some Reasons Why Carboxyhemoglobin may be Unexpectantly Low:

  • Long time interval between leaving site of CO poisoning and point where blood sample is drawn for measurement

  • Effects of resuscitation attempts (eg. administration of oxygen)

  • Concomitant presence of other drugs

  • Individual ability to tolerate hypoxia (eg. cardiopulmonary disease)

  • Inaccuracy of COHb assay method and/or procedures

  • Rapid onset of intoxication
